Darmstadtium is the 110th superheavy element, first synthesized in 1994 by the GSI team in Germany by bombarding lead-208 with nickel-62 ions, and named after the German city of Darmstadt. Its isotopes have extremely short half-lives, it does not occur in nature, and only a few atoms are produced per synthesis. It has no industrial uses and is studied only for nuclear properties and relativistic effects.
The chemical behavior of darmstadtium has been investigated only in single-atom experiments, suggesting possible platinum-group-metal-like properties. No weighable darmstadtium compound has ever been isolated, and no practical applications exist.
